Questions about down products

This page offers answers to the questions we are most commonly asked about down products.

Where does the down come from?

Joutsen Finland uses the best down in the world. The raw material comes from carefully selected partner farms around Europe, where the down of the waterfowl grows in natural conditions. The down used for insulation in Joutsen products is a by-product of food production. Joutsen Finland does not use feathers and down plucked from living birds.

In the most valuable export items, Joutsen down duvets, very rare eiderdown is also used. This eiderdown is harvested from abandoned nests in the Finnish outer archipelago.

Which bird does the down used for the products come from?

Down is obtained only from aquatic birds. We use duck, goose and eiderdown in our products.

Can down products be washed?

Water doesn’t harm down – it comes from aquatic birds, after all. Wash and air the down product regularly, because a down product is at its best when it is clean and fresh. A down coat and duvet should be washed once a year and a down pillow more frequently, as needed. Care instructions can be found .

Does down cause allergies?

The carefully cleaned down used in Joutsen down products does not cause allergies. Down that has been poorly cleaned contains dust and other elements that sensitise individuals to allergies. In 2005, Joutsen Finland Oy became the first down duvet and pillow manufacturer to be granted the ‘allergy label’. This label, awarded by the Finnish Allergy and Asthma Federation, serves as proof that a product is pure and suitable for people with allergies. The same pure down is used in Joutsen down coats, but these products do not carry the Allergy label because of the different fabrics used and the low washing temperatures. What is the Joutsen Down System™ process?

Its purity is a result of our very own Joutsen Down System™. To ensure that each and every Joutsen® product is completely clean and free of dust, the Joutsen Down System™ process includes two dust removals as well as washing and a finishing cleansing treatment at 125 °C. Watch the video.

How long do Joutsen® products last?

We manufacture our products to serve their users for a long time. The useful life depends on the product and its use. A carefully maintained and correctly used product lasts for many years.

Does the down come through Joutsen® products?

Joutsen® down products use special fabrics designed for down products. Due to the breathability of the fabrics, loose fluff in the filling may sometimes pass through the fabric. In minor quantities, this is normal and has no effect on the thermal or usage properties of the product. In bedding with cotton fabrics, the first wash of the product tightens the fabric and reduces the possibility of the fluff coming through.

Is there a washing or repair service for Joutsen® products?

We repair and wash all Joutsen® products in our factory against a fee. If you have accidentally torn your coat or your duvet needs washing, please do not hesitate to contact our factory – we shall fix your product.

Why does a down duvet with cotton fabric rustle?

The cotton fabric manufacturing process used for down duvets includes calendering that completes the tightness of the fabric. Calendering is an industrial pressing process. For this reason, the fabric rustles slightly when new, and this is typical for a down duvet. The rustling is reduced with washings.

What do the terms ‘Nomite’ and ‘Downafresh’ mean?

The Nomite brand on a product means that the fabric is ‘dust-mite-proof’. Contrary to a popular belief, the Nomite brand has no relevance to the purity of a down product. The Downafresh brand means that the raw down material has been washed with water and heated at 100°C.

The Joutsen Down System feather refining process exceeds these requirements clearly, creating a unique standard in the industry.

Where are Joutsen products manufactured?

Most Joutsen products are manufactured at our own factories in Finland and Estonia. If necessary, we can use subcontractors for sewing.

How warm is a Joutsen down coat?

We manufacture down coats with different amounts of filling. Light down coats are designed for use in autumn, spring and summer, and winter down coats for winter conditions. In addition to the filling, the thermal properties of coats are affected by the wearer’s personal physiology. The down filling, as such, does not give up heat – rather, the operating principle behind a down filling is to utilise the heat radiating from the wearer. Coats with ribbing on the ends of the sleeves, hem tightening, and a hood are the warmest, because they are best at utilising this heat. Also, a down coat should be the correct size, because a coat that is too large or small is cold.
